We ordered this table rather than picking one up locally specifically because of the Melissa & Doug brand: We thought it guaranteed us a quality product. Well, not so. The quality just isn't there. As soon as we began to unpack the pieces, paint began chipping off the edges. I'd expect that if someone was hitting the pieces or knocking them together, but that wasn't the case.
I also noticed that some of the wood pieces that form the interior bracework had some cracks on the edges, but I hoped that wouldn't affect the overall integrity of the table. We hadn't had the table a week when one of the interior braces cracked completely and the table top fell in. I have toddlers who just turned 2, so it's not like the table suffered abuse for this to happen. It just seems like the pieces that are supposed to provide the support for the table would be made of hard wood rather than pine and that there would be a better bracing structure inside.
We purchased this table to use with a large train set. However, even when it's repaired, I'm concerned that a small child leaning across the table to reach a train piece will cause the top to collapse unless the table is modified. That's more of a headache than we expected. From our experience, I can't recommend this table.
My three year old loves this table. He has Thomas' round house on it and three bridges plus many other places to run his trains through. At night some of the trains go into the round house but most go in the drawer provided. Other toys can be stored under the table out of the way; which helps keep the room tidy. He plays with this table EVERY day
This is a great idea as long as the kids do not climb on it. The table is made of a thinner wood and will not support a 3 year old. But all and all I love it.
